What happens to your files
Nothing leaves your device. When you pick a file, your browser reads it into memory, does the work with JavaScript running on your computer or phone, and hands you the result. There is no upload, no server-side processing and no account.
You do not have to take our word for it. The page ships with a Content Security Policy that tells the browser to block every network request except loading the page itself and its libraries. Open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab while you use a tool, and you will see no file data go anywhere.
Limits worth knowing
- Everything happens in your browser's memory, so very large files can be slow or fail. A few hundred megabytes is the practical limit; on phones, less.
- Page previews are shown for documents up to 300 pages. Larger files still work, without the pictures.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened here yet.
- Compress PDF with a size goal tries a gentle clean-up first and only redraws pages as pictures when it has to. Very small targets on text-heavy files can come out hard to read.
- Merging, splitting and collating flatten fillable forms: the filled-in values stay visible, but the fields are no longer editable, and bookmarks do not carry over. Deleting, reordering, rotating, numbering, watermarking and signing keep forms and bookmarks intact.
- Editing a PDF that already carries a certificate-based digital signature invalidates that signature. The tools warn you when they see one.
- Sign PDF adds a picture of your signature. It is not a certificate-based digital signature.
- Strong PDF compression turns every page into a picture: text stops being selectable or searchable, and links, forms and vector graphics are lost.
Browsers
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and mobile. HEIC photos from iPhones convert in any browser; outside Safari a small decoder is downloaded the first time.
Ads and scripts
Any third-party script on a page can read what is on that page. If ads are ever shown here, they will not appear on the password generator, invoice or text tools.
